Authorities have imposed a ban on all Ferris wheel rides until further notice as a precautionary measure for public safety. This decision was announced by Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace, following thorough discussions with senior officials in the ministry.

The move comes after a concerning incident in Taveuni during the Wairiki Sevens festival, where a Ferris wheel malfunctioned while patrons were still aboard. Eyewitness accounts, accompanied by a video circulating on social media, depicted troubling scenes as smoke was seen billowing from the ride’s engine. Quick-thinking bystanders intervened to turn off the engine manually, ensuring that all riders could disembark safely.

Minister Singh explained that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit has since conducted an inspection of the malfunctioning Ferris wheel. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the incident, and a preliminary report is expected to shed light on how the engine failure occurred. Singh emphasized the need for tighter regulations within the amusement ride industry, noting concerns about operators using outdated and poorly maintained equipment.

In the wake of this incident, it is encouraging that officials are taking immediate action to enhance safety standards for amusement rides. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to safeguarding the public and ensuring that such incidents do not occur in the future. As investigations proceed, there is hope that more stringent regulations can be established, creating a safer environment for families and patrons looking to enjoy fairground attractions.
