Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced a temporary suspension of Ferris wheel operations until further notice. This decision comes in light of a recent incident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni, which reportedly malfunctioned and forced patrons to disembark with the assistance of operators and bystanders. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The call for a ban follows extensive consultations between the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations and the Prime Minister’s office. The National Occupational Health and Safety Service (NOHSS) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. The Ministry of Employment has emphasized that a comprehensive analysis of the event will take place, and updates will be provided in due course based on the evidence gathered.
In response to the incident, Opposition MP Virendra Lal has urged the implementation of stricter regulations for Ferris wheel operators, noting that similar problems have occurred over the past two years. He advocates for tougher legislation aimed at preventing such incidents in the future.
This situation underlines the importance of ensuring safety measures within amusement rides. As the investigation unfolds, there is hope that authorities will be able to establish more robust guidelines that not only enhance safety standards but also foster greater public confidence in amusement attractions.
