A video shared on social media depicted smoke emerging from the ferris wheel’s engine, prompting onlookers to intervene and assist the riders in exiting the ride safely. Fortunately, all riders disembarked without injury.
Gade stated that the ferris wheel operator has been instructed to halt operations, emphasizing that public safety is of utmost importance. The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) authorities are set to inspect and dismantle the ride today.
Despite the incident, Gade reassured attendees that the ongoing Wairiki Sevens rugby tournament, which began on Tuesday and runs through Saturday, will proceed as planned. He encouraged spectators to come out in large numbers to support the event.
In a statement, police spokesperson Wame Bautolu confirmed the incident and mentioned that more details would be shared later.
