All ferris wheel rides have been suspended indefinitely to prioritize public safety. The decision was announced by Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace, Agni Deo Singh, following extensive discussions with senior ministry officials.

This action comes in response to a recent incident in Taveuni during the Wairiki Sevens, where a ferris wheel experienced a mechanical failure while patrons were on board. According to Minister Singh, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit has conducted an inspection of the ride.

A viral video captured the alarming moment when smoke was seen emitting from the ride’s engine. Bystanders promptly intervened to manually stop the engine, allowing all passengers to safely disembark. Minister Singh stated that an investigation into the incident has been initiated, with the OHS team gathering information to understand the cause of the mechanical failure.

Preliminary reports will shed light on how the engine malfunctioned, and there are concerns that such issues may stem from amusement ride operators using outdated and inadequately maintained equipment.

This temporary ban aims to prevent future incidents, ensuring that all amusement rides meet safety standards before resuming operations. By prioritizing safety, the government is taking responsible steps to protect the public while reinforcing the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks in amusement rides.

In light of this situation, there’s hope that the investigation will lead to improved safety regulations in the amusement industry, ultimately providing families with a secure and enjoyable experience at future events.
