A ban on all ferris wheel rides has been enacted until further notice in order to prioritize public safety. Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace, Agni Deo Singh, announced this decision following thorough discussions with senior staff from his ministry.

This measure comes in response to a recent incident in Taveuni at the Wairiki Sevens event, where a ferris wheel experienced a mechanical malfunction while patrons were still on board. Minister Singh noted that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit has carried out an inspection of the ride.

A video circulating on social media captured the alarming scene, showing smoke rising from the engine as onlookers attempted to manually halt it to ensure the riders’ safety. Fortunately, all passengers safely disembarked from the malfunctioning ferris wheel.

In light of the incident, Minister Singh has initiated an investigation, with the OHS team deployed to examine the situation further. He indicated that a preliminary report would shed light on the factors contributing to the engine malfunction.

Minister Singh expressed concern that many amusement ride operators might be utilizing old and poorly maintained equipment, which could be responsible for such incidents.

This decision reflects a proactive approach to ensuring safety at amusement parks and events, emphasizing the importance of thorough maintenance and inspections of rides. Although the ban may be disappointing for thrill-seekers, it highlights a commitment to safeguarding public welfare and preventing future incidents.

Overall, while the temporary suspension of ferris wheel rides may be viewed negatively, it serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of safety in amusement operations. With ongoing investigations, there’s hope for improvements in ride safety standards that will ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all in the future.
