In a move aimed at safeguarding public safety, all ferris wheel rides will be suspended until further notice. This decision was announced by Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace, after thorough discussions with senior ministry officials.

The announcement comes in the wake of a concerning incident during the Wairiki Sevens event in Taveuni, where a ferris wheel experienced a mechanical failure while riders were still aboard. A video circulated on social media displayed alarming scenes of smoke rising from the ferris wheel’s engine, prompting bystanders to intervene and assist in halting the ride to ensure the safe disembarkation of passengers.

Minister Singh affirmed that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit has already inspected the malfunctioned ferris wheel. He ordered an investigation into the incident, with the OHS team tasked to gather crucial information about the engine’s malfunction. The initial report is expected to shed light on the situation and help prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Concern has been expressed regarding the operational standards of amusement ride operators, with fears that some may be using aging and inadequately maintained equipment. This situation underscores the importance of stringent safety measures in the amusement industry to ensure the protection of riders.

While this temporary ban may cause disappointment among amusement enthusiasts, it presents an opportunity for thorough examinations and improvements in safety protocols. By prioritizing public safety, the authorities aim to restore trust in amusement operations, ensuring that fun is paired with the highest standards of safety.

This proactive approach reflects a commitment to securing a safe enjoyment experience for all in the future.
