The recent ban imposed by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations on the operation of Ferris Wheels has left Hassan Shah, the owner of Sha’s Amusement Rides, feeling disheartened. With over 40 years of experience in the amusement industry, Mr. Shah expressed his frustration regarding the absence of proper consultation before the ban was enacted.
“The ban was enforced without following the appropriate processes, and it has severely jeopardized the long-term viability of my business,” lamented Mr. Shah. He also highlighted that his company employed more than 15 people, but now, due to this sudden decision, only two remain employed.
Mr. Shah emphasized that his amusement rides have operated safely for years without any incidents that compromised public safety. However, the unexpected prohibition has left him and his workers in a state of uncertainty, raising concerns about how to sustain the business.
“Many people depend on the Ferris Wheel operations during festivals for their livelihood, and now their future hangs in the balance,” he noted. After investing substantial resources into his business over the decades, Mr. Shah feels that this ban undermines his efforts and achievements.
He is calling on the government to consider alternative solutions that may allow his business to continue operating. “Many families rely on this work; the government needs to reassess and conduct a thorough investigation into this matter,” he stated.
The ban followed a mechanical incident that occurred during the Wairiki 7s event in Taveuni, where the Ferris Wheel malfunctioned, prompting bystanders to intervene for the safety of the riders.
In light of these challenges, it’s hopeful that both the business owners and governmental authorities will engage in constructive dialogue to find a viable way forward. This could lead to improved safety measures and perhaps new opportunities for Sha’s Amusement Rides and others in the industry.
Overall, while the current situation is concerning, there is potential for collaboration and innovation that could support the future of local amusement businesses.
