A suspension on all ferris wheel rides has been enacted until further notice to prioritize public safety. Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations, stated that this decision followed extensive discussions with senior staff within the ministry.
This action comes in the wake of a concerning incident at the Wairiki Sevens in Taveuni, where a ferris wheel experienced a mechanical failure while patrons were aboard. Witnesses shared a video online showing smoke rising from the ferris wheel’s engine as bystanders intervened to help stop the ride, allowing the riders to disembark safely.
Minister Singh highlighted that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit has already inspected the ferris wheel. In addition, he has called for a thorough investigation into the malfunction, and the OHS team is currently following up on the matter. A preliminary report is expected soon, which will shed light on the engine’s malfunction.
Concerns have been raised regarding the condition of amusement rides, with speculation that many operators may be using older, poorly maintained equipment.
This situation serves as a vital reminder of the importance of safety protocols in amusement parks. It is crucial to ensure that all rides are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent such incidents in the future.
As we look forward, this ban could lead to improved safety standards within the amusement ride sector, fostering greater trust among the public when returning to amusement parks. The ongoing investigation and resulting actions from the government may pave the way for enhanced regulations and better maintenance practices in the industry.
