Manchester United surged to sixth place in the Premier League on Monday, aided by a standout performance from captain Bruno Fernandes, who scored two goals in a decisive 4-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. This match further highlighted the challenges facing Wolves, who sit at the bottom of the table with their grim season taking a turn for the worse.

Wolves supporters expressed their frustration throughout the first half, directing chants towards the club’s Chinese owners, Fosun. The atmosphere soured even further when Fernandes capitalized on United’s chances, scoring in the 25th minute to give his team the lead. Despite their struggles, Wolves showed some resilience and managed to equalize just before halftime, thanks to Haiti international Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s goal in stoppage time.

However, Manchester United reclaimed the lead shortly after the halftime break, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring from close range in the 52nd minute. Mason Mount extended the lead to 3-1 just after the hour mark with a steady finish. Fernandes eventually sealed the match by converting a penalty, awarded after VAR reviewed a handball.

As the match drew to a close, Wolves fans inside Molineux expressed their despair by booing and chanting for the final whistle as nine minutes of stoppage time were declared. With this defeat, Wolves have now recorded a club-record eighth consecutive league loss and sit perilously on just two points after 15 games.

Their current point total is tied for the lowest at this stage in the history of England’s top four divisions, and they have not secured a league win since April, suffering 16 losses and three draws in the process. Wolves now find themselves 13 points adrift of safety, prompting discussions not on a potential recovery but rather on whether they may set a record for the fewest points in a Premier League season, surpassing Derby County’s dismal total of 11 from 2007-08.

The troubling plight of Wolves serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of football and the immediate need for change if they hope to turn their fortunes around.
