Fearless Advocacy Sparks Pacific Push for Climate Justice at Regional Human Rights Conference

Acting President and Chief Justice Salesi Temo called for fearless advocacy during the opening of the Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions in Nadi. Addressing the delegates, he emphasized that the conference would tackle the most pressing issues of human rights in the region, particularly focusing on the protection of vulnerable communities affected by climate change.

Justice Temo stressed the necessity of strengthening national human rights institutions to act independently and effectively. He articulated that without robust institutions, the ability to protect and give voice to marginalized communities diminishes. In light of urgent environmental threats, Temo remarked on the critical importance of localizing responses to climate change, framing it as an existential reality for Pacific nations facing rising sea levels and severe weather events.

The conference aims to broaden the dialogue by including civil society organizations, regional experts, and community leaders, all representing the voices of the communities they serve. Temo highlighted that the theme “Shared Journeys Across the Asia Pacific: Advancing Human Rights” resonates with the collective challenges and common commitments among nations in the region. He noted the intertwined nature of human rights crises, such as climate change, armed conflict, and systemic discrimination against women and minorities, necessitating a concerted regional approach.

Fiji’s experience is emblematic of the broader situation in the Pacific, with reports indicating that 676 communities may face relocation due to climate-induced phenomena like rising sea levels and extreme rainfall. Justice Temo underscored the duty of delegates to work together towards tangible actions that would empower communities to claim their rights effectively and foster a more inclusive society.

He also asserted that protecting the right to a healthy environment is fundamental, highlighting how environmental defenders often put themselves at risk. Temo called for collective responsibility to ensure their voices are heard and safeguarded.

The acting Chief Justice expressed gratitude to the Asia Pacific Forum and the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission for facilitating this crucial dialogue. The forum represents a beacon of hope, suggesting that through collaboration and commitment, the region can navigate its complex challenges and build a more equitable future.

In echoing the sentiments from related discussions on the significance of integrating Indigenous knowledge and boosting civil society participation at regional forums, the conference stands as a pivotal moment for collective action towards climate justice and human rights, fostering optimism for the future of Pacific communities.
