Beyond the headline

During recent consultations on the proposed Narcotics Bill, a Labasa resident highlighted the pervasive fear that is preventing the public from reporting illicit drug activities. Speaking at the Civic Centre, Kansami Naiker emphasized the wealth of information that communities possess but pointed out that fear of reprisals is keeping many individuals silent.

Naiker remarked, “The public is rich with information, but we must ask the reasons they are not coming forward. It’s because they are afraid.” He recounted instances where intelligence provided to law enforcement reached drug offenders before action could be taken, underscoring the need for improvements in internal systems.

Expressing hope for the new legislation, Naiker called for stronger protections for whistleblowers and advocated for stricter enforcement of drug laws. He stated, “There is a need for stricter enforcement of drug laws. I am not saying we should introduce the death penalty, but strict enforcement is necessary.”

Narcotics Bill consultant Inspector Jemesa Lave acknowledged the challenges posed by the current fear surrounding drug reporting. He pointed out that while people are quick to report other crimes, such as theft, drug offenses are treated differently due to the fear of victimization by drug dealers.

Inspector Lave noted that police often find themselves needing to gather intelligence without outside assistance, as the culture of intimidation continues to stifle potential informants. The discussions highlight a critical need for not only effective legislation but also community support to break the cycle of fear and promote safety in local neighborhoods.

In summary, the push for the Narcotics Bill reflects a growing recognition of the issues surrounding drug enforcement and the vital role that community involvement plays in addressing these challenges. With hopeful prospects for improved whistleblower protections and stricter law enforcement, there is potential for positive change in the fight against drug activities.
