The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) has expressed strong confidence in its role as the primary voice for employers, according to CEO Edward Bernard. This assurance follows a recent Combined Council Meeting in Nadi, where members were updated on significant progress achieved this year.

Bernard noted that membership confidence has reached unprecedented levels, largely attributed to FCEF’s active lobbying, including contributions to the review of the Employment Relations Act and proposals submitted to the Wages Council. The Federation has also been proactive in engaging with national policies related to employment, trade, and labor mobility, bolstering confidence among its members.

The FCEF’s nine active councils, representing various sectors such as tourism, manufacturing, and small enterprises, have played a crucial part in advocating necessary reforms and providing vital industry insights to enhance Fiji’s economic resilience. In line with this, FCEF reported a seven percent increase in membership subscriptions this financial year, improving its ability to deliver valuable services.

Furthermore, about $385,000 has been secured through donor funding over the past eight months, contributing to the enhancement of FCEF’s secretariat activities. Looking ahead, the Federation plans to restructure its membership categories, introducing a more equitable seven-tier structure that includes micro and small businesses, particularly those led by women. This initiative aims to ensure that membership benefits are accessible to a broader range of businesses, promoting inclusivity.

Additionally, to modernize its approach, FCEF has launched an online membership portal, aligning with its digital strategy. This platform facilitates easy registration and access to business resources, enhancing communication among members regarding policy discussions and events.

This forward-thinking approach by FCEF not only strengthens its foundational role within Fiji’s economic landscape but also highlights opportunities for collaboration among businesses to navigate the evolving labor market effectively.

Overall, there’s a sense of optimism as FCEF works to advance reforms that can balance the needs of employers while also promoting protections for workers, simultaneously paving the way for sustainable economic growth in Fiji.
