The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) has expressed significant concerns regarding the upcoming public consultations for the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Work Care Bill 2024, which are set to take place from January 8 to 17, 2025. According to FCEF, the time allotted for submissions is inadequate and the lack of access to the draft Bills hampers effective participation in the consultations.
FCEF’s CEO, Edward Bernard, has called on the Ministry of Employment to postpone these consultations until February 2025. He emphasizes the necessity of releasing the draft Bills ahead of time to enable businesses and workers to engage fully in the discussions. Bernard also criticized the short duration of just three hours allocated for each city and town, arguing that this does not allow sufficient time for effective representation from stakeholders.
Furthermore, Bernard pointed out that the Work Care Bill 2024 has not undergone discussions with the Employment Relations Advisory Board (ERAB), calling for its withdrawal until a more inclusive consultation process with stakeholders can take place.
This situation underscores the importance of thorough consultations in shaping effective employment laws, benefitting both employers and employees. By advocating for extended timelines and inclusive discussions, the FCEF aims to foster a more balanced dialogue that can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes.
In summary, the FCEF is advocating for better preparation and engagement in the discussions surrounding significant employment legislation in Fiji. This appeal reflects a desire for constructive dialogue that promotes the interests of both businesses and the workforce. A collaborative approach could lead to legislation that better serves all parties involved.
