The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched an investigation into reports of possible price hikes and supply issues regarding whole bird chicken in some retail outlets. This action comes in response to consumer complaints about escalating prices and the lack of availability for certain sizes of whole bird chicken.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham stated that the commission has reached out to the two main suppliers, Crest and Rooster, seeking clarification on the current supply situation and any price adjustments. “While both manufacturers have claimed there are no price increases or supply problems, we have received conflicting information from retailers,” Abraham noted.
“Retailers have mentioned shortages and confirmed that discounts have been removed, which directly affects their retail pricing.” He expressed concern over the discrepancies between the reports from manufacturers and retailers, and the FCCC is taking this matter seriously.
Abraham emphasized that the FCCC will take strong action against any entity found to be providing misleading information or exploiting consumers by withholding discounts or manipulating supply. “As part of this initiative, the FCCC is also ready to suggest policy changes regarding imports if it becomes clear that local suppliers are not operating fairly.”
“Our duty is to protect consumers from unfair business practices, and we will not hesitate to implement stringent regulatory measures,” he said. “We will not accept any efforts to raise prices or restrict product availability at the expense of Fijian consumers.”
Abraham cautioned that any trader or manufacturer found to be giving false or misleading information could face severe consequences under the law. With the festive season approaching, the FCCC’s top priority is to ensure that whole bird chicken, a staple for Fijian households, remains affordable, accessible, and in supply, and the Commission will provide more updates as the investigation unfolds.
