FCCC Probes Chicken Price Surge Amid Consumer Outcry

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched an investigation following reports of possible price hikes and supply shortages of whole bird chicken in various retail outlets. This action was prompted by consumer concerns regarding increasing prices and the absence of certain sizes of chicken.

FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham stated that the commission has reached out to major suppliers, Crest and Rooster, seeking clarification on the current supply status and any pricing changes.

“While both manufacturers have maintained that there are no price increases or supply issues, we have encountered inconsistent reports from retailers,” Abraham remarked. “Retailers have indicated shortages and noted the removal of discounts, which directly affects weekly retail prices.”

The discrepancies between the manufacturers’ and retailers’ reports are alarming to the FCCC, which is actively investigating the situation. Abraham emphasized that the FCCC is prepared to take strong action against anyone found to be spreading misinformation or exploiting consumers by withholding discounts or manipulating supply.

“In line with this effort, the FCCC may also recommend policy changes on imports if it is determined that local suppliers are not operating fairly,” he added. “Our obligation is to shield consumers from unfair business practices, and we will not hesitate to implement strict regulatory measures.”

He reiterated the commission’s commitment to preventing any attempts to inflate prices or restrict product availability, especially as the festive season approaches. Abraham also warned that traders or manufacturers providing false or misleading information will face serious legal repercussions.

With the festive season on the horizon, the FCCC’s priority is to ensure that whole bird chicken, an essential item for many Fijian households, remains affordable, accessible, and available. The commission will provide further updates as the investigation unfolds.
