FCCC Investigates Rising Chicken Prices Amid Consumer Concerns

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched an investigation in response to consumer reports indicating potential price hikes and supply shortages of whole bird chicken at various retail outlets.

These concerns arose as consumers noted rising prices and the lack of certain sizes of whole bird chicken available for purchase. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham stated that the commission has contacted major suppliers, Crest and Rooster, to seek clarification regarding the current supply situation and any pricing adjustments.

“While both manufacturers have asserted that there are no price increases or supply issues, we have received contradictory information from retailers,” Abraham explained. “Retailers have reported shortages and have indicated the removal of discounts, directly affecting weekly retail prices.”

The disparities between the reports from manufacturers and retailers have raised alarms for the FCCC, prompting them to actively investigate the issue.

Abraham emphasized that the FCCC would take firm action against any entities found to be misleading consumers, whether through withholding discounts or manipulating supply chains. He mentioned that the FCCC is ready to recommend policy changes concerning imports if local suppliers are determined to be acting unfairly.

“Our duty is to safeguard consumers against unfair business practices, and we will not shy away from implementing strict regulatory measures,” he noted. “We will not accept any attempts to increase prices or restrict product availability, which would harm Fijian consumers.”

He also cautioned that any trader or manufacturer found disseminating false or misleading information could face serious legal consequences.

With the festive season fast approaching, the FCCC is prioritizing the affordability, accessibility, and availability of whole bird chicken—a vital product for many Fijian households—and will provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
