The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched an inquiry into reports suggesting possible price hikes and supply shortages of whole bird chicken in various retail outlets. This investigation follows consumer complaints regarding escalating prices and the absence of specific sizes of whole bird chicken.
FCCC’s Chief Executive, Joel Abraham, stated that the commission has reached out to the main suppliers, Crest and Rooster, for clarification on the current supply status and any potential pricing adjustments.
“Although both manufacturers have claimed there are no price increases or supply problems, we have received contradictory reports from retailers,” noted Abraham. “Retailers have reported shortages and confirmed that discounts have been removed, which directly affects weekly retail pricing.”
The inconsistency between the statements from manufacturers and retailers raises significant concerns for the FCCC, which is actively probing the issue.
Abraham emphasized that the FCCC is prepared to take firm action against any entities that provide misleading information or exploit consumers by withdrawing discounts or manipulating supplies.
“As part of this initiative, FCCC is also ready to propose policy changes regarding imports if it is found that local suppliers are not engaging in fair practices,” he added. “Our obligation is to safeguard consumers from unjust business behaviors, and we will not hesitate to implement stringent regulatory actions.”
He further stated, “We will not permit any attempts to hike prices or restrict product availability that harms Fijian consumers.”
Abraham cautioned that any trader or manufacturer found to be disseminating false or misleading information would face severe repercussions in accordance with the law.
“With the festive season on the horizon, the FCCC’s main objective is to ensure that whole bird chicken, an essential item for Fijian families, remains affordable, accessible, and sufficiently stocked. The Commission will provide further updates as the investigation continues.”
