The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched an investigation into reports of potential price hikes and supply shortages of whole bird chicken in some retail outlets. This action comes in response to consumer complaints regarding increasing prices and the lack of availability of certain sizes of whole bird chicken.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham announced that the Commission has contacted major suppliers, Crest and Rooster, for clarification regarding the current supply status and any price adjustments. “Although both manufacturers have stated that there are no price increases or supply issues, we have received contradictory accounts from retailers,” Abraham noted.
Retailers have indicated shortages and confirmed the elimination of discounts, which directly affects consumer pricing at the stores. “The inconsistency between the reports from manufacturers and retailers is a significant concern for the FCCC, and we are actively looking into it,” Abraham stated.
He emphasized that the FCCC would take firm action against any parties found to be disseminating misleading information or taking advantage of consumers by withholding discounts or manipulating supply levels. “In our efforts, the FCCC is also ready to propose policy changes regarding imports if local suppliers are found to be acting unfairly,” he added.
Abraham reiterated the FCCC’s commitment to safeguarding consumers from unfair business practices and affirmed that strict regulatory actions will be enforced. “We will not allow any attempts to increase prices or restrict product availability at the expense of Fijian consumers,” he declared.
He cautioned that traders or manufacturers providing false or misleading information could face serious repercussions under the law. As the holiday season approaches, the FCCC’s priority is to ensure that whole bird chicken remains affordable, accessible, and readily available for Fijian households, with further updates to follow as the investigation continues.
