The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to avoid exploiting the festive season for profit. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized the organization’s commitment to taking strict action against traders who engage in unethical practices such as price gouging and misleading promotions.
Abraham stated, “Let us work together to uphold fairness and ensure that the festive spirit is not marred by unethical practices.” He highlighted that in preparation for Christmas, the FCCC has been active across the nation, conducting inspections and surveys to safeguard consumer interests.
Throughout November, the FCCC executed over 700 inspections focusing on preventing deceptive practices and price gouging. Their efforts identified 44 potential violations, which included instances of overcharging, failure to display prices, and neglecting to apply duty and VAT reductions to retail prices.
Appropriate actions will be taken against those found in violation, including warning letters, increased surveillance, and prosecution when necessary. In December alone, the FCCC has already performed 417 inspections to ensure compliance among traders during the busy holiday shopping season. This proactive approach aims to preemptively address potential consumer issues.
Abraham also called on the community to reflect on kindness during this festive time. He encouraged individuals to look out for vulnerable members in their neighborhoods, such as elderly individuals or those spending the holidays alone. Simple gestures, like sharing a meal or offering companionship, can significantly impact those less fortunate.
This message serves as a reminder that while it is important to maintain fair standards in business practices, the true spirit of the season lies in compassion and community support.
