The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging traders to avoid exploiting the festive season for profit. The organization’s chief executive, Joel Abraham, emphasized that strict measures will be enforced against any instances of price gouging, misleading promotions, or unfair treatment of consumers.

“Our goal is to ensure that the festive spirit remains intact and is not overshadowed by unethical business practices,” Abraham stated. He noted the FCCC’s proactive approach, with teams conducting numerous inspections and surveys nationwide in anticipation of the holiday shopping period.

In November alone, the FCCC executed over 700 inspections, specifically focusing on preventing price gouging and deceitful marketing. This effort uncovered 44 potential violations, which included overcharging, failure to display prices, and not correctly reflecting duty and VAT reductions in pricing.

To address these violations, the FCCC plans to take appropriate enforcement actions ranging from issuing warning letters to placing offenders under surveillance or pursuing legal action when necessary. This month, the commission has already performed 417 pre-Christmas inspections to ensure traders comply with consumer protection laws amid the holiday rush.

Abraham highlighted that the festive season also presents an opportunity for reflection on generosity and community support. He encouraged individuals to take a moment to check on vulnerable members of their communities, such as elderly neighbors or those spending the holidays alone. Simple acts of kindness—like sharing a meal or providing companionship—can greatly impact those in need.

In summary, the FCCC is dedicated to maintaining fair trading practices during the festive season while also promoting community compassion. This approach not only protects consumers but also fosters a sense of togetherness and kindness among citizens.

Overall, this initiative reflects a commitment to fairness and compassion in the community, serving as a valuable reminder for everyone to support each other during this joyful time of year.
