The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has issued a warning to traders against exploiting the festive season for profit. CEO Joel Abraham emphasized the need for fairness during this time, stating that the FCCC will take decisive action against any instances of price gouging, misleading promotions, or unfair business practices.

In preparation for the holiday shopping period, the FCCC has been proactive in monitoring compliance, conducting more than 700 inspections in November alone. Their efforts have led to the identification of 44 potential violations, which include overpricing and the failure to properly display prices or adhere to price reductions related to duties and VAT.

Abraham indicated that the FCCC is committed to enforcing regulations, which may involve issuing warning letters, increasing surveillance on non-compliant businesses, or pursuing legal action against offenders. In December, the FCCC has already completed 417 inspections to ensure traders maintain ethical practices during the busy shopping season.

He further encouraged the public to embrace the spirit of kindness during the holidays by reaching out to vulnerable members of the community, such as the elderly or those who may be spending the festive season alone. Simple acts of kindness can significantly impact those who are less fortunate, highlighting the importance of generosity during this time.

In summary, the FCCC is taking significant measures to protect consumers during the holiday season while also promoting a message of compassion and community spirit. By ensuring fair trading practices, they aim to preserve the festive spirit and foster a supportive environment for everyone.

This approach not only safeguards consumers but also reinforces the values of community and care in society, which can lead to a more harmonious holiday season.
