The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is issuing a reminder to traders to refrain from exploiting the festive season. Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness during this joyful time, outlining that the FCCC will take strong action against any instances of price gouging, misleading promotions, or unfair trading practices.

Abraham highlighted the organization’s efforts leading up to Christmas, as teams have been diligently conducting inspections and surveys nationwide. In November alone, they performed over 700 checks, focusing on preventing unethical pricing strategies and deceptive behaviors in the market. This proactive approach led to the identification of 44 potential violations, including overcharging and failure to display prices or reflect applicable duty and VAT reductions.

To address these issues, Abraham noted that appropriate enforcement measures will be implemented, which may include warning letters, increased monitoring of businesses, or legal action against offenders. This month has already seen an additional 417 inspections aimed at ensuring compliance among traders during the busy holiday shopping period.

In his message, Abraham also encourages the community to embrace kindness during the festive season. He urges individuals to look out for vulnerable members of their community, including the elderly or those who may be spending the holidays alone. Simple acts of kindness, such as sharing a meal or offering companionship, can significantly impact those who are less fortunate.

This reminder from the FCCC not only seeks to protect consumer rights but also fosters a sense of community and compassion during a time that is often associated with joy and giving. The agency’s ongoing efforts to ensure fairness in trade reflect a commitment to creating a positive holiday experience for all consumers.

In summary, the FCCC is taking diligent actions to ensure a fair and ethical festive season in Fiji while also encouraging community support and kindness. This dual focus on consumer protection and compassion highlights the spirit of togetherness that transcends the holiday shopping rush.
