The CEO of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), Joel Abraham, has issued a stern warning to any chicken traders or manufacturers that provide false or misleading information, stating they will face significant repercussions. This statement comes as the FCCC investigates reports of price increases and supply shortages regarding whole bird chicken in various retail outlets.
Concerns from consumers about escalating prices and the lack of availability for certain sizes of whole bird chicken prompted Mr. Abraham’s remarks. He revealed that the FCCC has reached out to the major chicken suppliers, Crest and Rooster, to seek clarification on the current supply status and any pricing alterations.
“Both manufacturers have claimed there are no price hikes or supply issues; however, we have received contradictory reports from retailers,” Mr. Abraham noted. Retailers have reported shortages and the discontinuation of discounts, which directly affect weekly retail prices.
The FCCC finds the disparity between the reports from manufacturers and retailers alarming and is actively investigating the situation. Mr. Abraham emphasized that the FCCC is prepared to take strong action against anyone found to be misleading consumers by withholding discounts or manipulating supply.
He also stated that the FCCC may recommend policy changes concerning imports if local suppliers are found to be acting unfairly. “Our duty is to safeguard consumers from unjust business practices, and we will enforce strict regulatory measures without hesitation,” Mr. Abraham affirmed. He reiterated that any trader or manufacturer providing falsehoods will face serious legal consequences.
