FCCC CEO Resigns: A Legacy of Transformation in Consumer Protection

Joel Abraham has stepped down from his position as the Chief Executive Officer of the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC). He joined the commission, previously known as the Commerce Commission, in 2013 and held the CEO position since 2016.

The FCCC released a statement highlighting Mr. Abraham’s impactful leadership, emphasizing his commitment to developing a regulatory environment that prioritizes fairness, consumer protection, and economic integrity in Fiji and across the Asia-Pacific region. Under his guidance, FCCC has focused on safeguarding consumers against unethical business practices through the implementation of a strong competition and consumer protection framework.

During his tenure, Mr. Abraham significantly contributed to FCCC’s growth in capacity and effectiveness, earning the organization both national and international respect as a leading competition authority. He played a crucial role in forming the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), which has fostered regional collaboration and enhanced regulatory standards throughout the Pacific.

In addition to regulatory advancements, Mr. Abraham introduced employee-focused initiatives, such as the iCARE program, sustainability initiatives, and flexible work arrangements. His leadership has also facilitated important developments in the infrastructure and resource management of the FCCC, laying the groundwork for a proactive regulatory body.

His efforts have been recognized through various accolades, including the Fiji Business Excellence Awards and the National Green Sustainability Award, which have positioned FCCC as a premier regulatory authority in the region.

Manoa Kamikamica, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, highlighted the positive impact of Mr. Abraham’s work, stating that consumers are in a better position today due to his leadership. He praised Mr. Abraham for his dedication to consumer rights and his ability to inspire collaborations that enhance regulatory frameworks.

Commission Chair Isikeli Tikoduadua referred to Mr. Abraham’s commitment to fair competition and consumer protection as transformative for the FCCC, expressing confidence that his legacy will continue to benefit Fijian consumers.

In looking ahead, Mr. Abraham announced plans to take on a regional role, indicating a continued commitment to consumer protection.
