Joel Abraham has stepped down from his position as chief executive officer of the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC). He joined the FCCC, previously known as the Commerce Commission, in 2013 and became CEO in 2016.
In a statement, the commission praised Mr. Abraham as a transformative leader who prioritized fairness, consumer protection, and economic integrity in Fiji and the greater Asia-Pacific region. His leadership was characterized by a strong commitment to protecting consumers from unfair practices, establishing effective competition frameworks, and fostering a culture of ethical business practices.
Under Mr. Abraham’s guidance, the FCCC has expanded in both capacity and influence, and gained recognition as a reputable competition authority at both national and international levels. Notably, his efforts were pivotal in forming the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), promoting regional collaboration and enhancing regulatory standards.
During his tenure, Mr. Abraham launched several employee-focused initiatives such as the iCARE program, sustainability packages, and flexible work arrangements, reflecting his commitment to both consumer and employee welfare. His leadership led to significant advancements in the commission’s infrastructure and resources, positioning FCCC as a robust regulatory body.
The commission received numerous accolades during his time, including the Fiji Business Excellence Awards and the National Green Sustainability Award, cementing FCCC’s role as a leading regulatory figure in the region. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica acknowledged Mr. Abraham’s significant contributions, noting that consumers are better protected today because of his leadership.
Commission Chair Isikeli Tikoduadua highlighted Mr. Abraham’s transformative impact on fair competition and consumer protection, stating that his legacy will continue to benefit Fijian consumers for years to come. Looking ahead, Mr. Abraham indicated plans to pursue a regional role.
