FCCC CEO Joel Abraham Resigns: What’s Next for Consumer Protection in Fiji?

Joel Abraham has stepped down from his position as the chief executive officer of the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC). Having joined the FCCC, previously known as the Commerce Commission, in 2013 and serving as CEO since 2016, Mr. Abraham’s influence over the years has been significant.

The commission acknowledged him as a transformative leader, emphasizing his commitment to developing a regulatory framework that emphasizes fairness, consumer protection, and economic integrity in Fiji and across the Asia-Pacific region. Under his leadership, the FCCC has concentrated on safeguarding consumers from unfair business practices and has successfully enforced an effective system for competition and consumer protection.

During his tenure, the FCCC not only improved its capacity and effectiveness but also gained national and international recognition as a reliable competition authority. One of his notable achievements was the establishment of the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), which fostered regional collaboration and elevated regulatory standards across the Pacific.

Mr. Abraham introduced several employee-centric initiatives, including the iCARE programme, sustainability initiatives, and flexible working arrangements, demonstrating his commitment to fostering a supportive workplace culture. His strategic leadership also laid the groundwork for a well-equipped regulatory body, enhancing the FCCC’s infrastructure and resource management.

The FCCC has received various accolades during Mr. Abraham’s leadership, including awards from the Fiji Business Excellence Awards and the National Green Sustainability Award, reinforcing its reputation as a leading regulatory authority in the region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communication Manoa Kamikamica praised Mr. Abraham’s commitment, stating that consumers have benefited greatly from his leadership. Mr. Kamikamica noted that Mr. Abraham’s contributions have not only enhanced regulatory standards but have also encouraged a collaborative spirit among Pacific nations.

Isikeli Tikoduadua, Chair of the Commission, referred to Mr. Abraham’s dedication to fair competition and consumer protection as transformative for the FCCC, asserting that his legacy will continue to influence the protection of Fijian consumers in the years to come.

As for his future, Mr. Abraham has indicated that he will pursue a regional role, continuing to make an impact in the area of competition and consumer protection.
