Former Fiji Broadcasting Corporation CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and the company’s current chief financial officer, Vimlesh Sagar, have opted to remain in the lower court for their legal proceedings. Both individuals made an appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

Sayed-Khaiyum faces allegations of abuse of office and general dishonesty resulting in a financial loss. Specifically, he is accused of bypassing the established tender process in FBC’s finance manual to purchase a 3.0L Volkswagon Touareg for $207,240. This transaction purportedly led to a total loss of $84,470 for the corporation.

Similarly, Sagar is charged with general dishonesty causing a loss for approving payments linked to the vehicle’s purchase. The trial for both men is scheduled to commence from September 2 to 12, 2025.

In a related case, the duo was set to have their pleas recorded before Suva Magistrate Krishan Prasad. However, the court session was canceled, with all related matters now set to start on December 11. In addition to his other charges, Sayed-Khaiyum is accused of engaging in five legal proceedings without the board’s consent, which cost FBC $138,813.37 between July 1, 2017, and January 31 of the previous year. For his part, Sagar is accused of unauthorized payments to R Patel Lawyers amounting to $15,075.88 within the timeframe of January 1, 2023, to December 31 of the previous year.

The case has been adjourned until April 11 next year, as both parties prepare for a lengthy legal process ahead.

This situation underscores the importance of corporate governance and accountability in organizations, as it illustrates the potential consequences of bypassing established protocols. The legal proceedings will provide an opportunity for clarity and resolution, helping to reaffirm the principles of transparency and integrity within Fiji’s broadcasting sector. As the case unfolds, it remains a reminder of the responsibilities held by those in leadership positions.
