Epeli Balawa, a dedicated single father from Korovuli Village, was overwhelmed with emotion when his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was honored with the Year Eight dux award at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. Mr. Balawa, 50, was moved to tears as Repeka’s name was called, not only for her academic achievement but also because she received a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School to help her further her education and sporting dreams.
At just 14 years old, Repeka has already made an impressive mark, having triumphed in the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals during the recent Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. She scored 425 out of 500 in her annual exams and has aspirations of becoming a primary school teacher.
Mr. Balawa, who has been raising his four children alone since his wife left four years ago, reflected on the challenges of providing for his family. He shared his pride in Repeka’s accomplishments, noting that she is following in his footsteps as he was the Year Eight dux at Bulavou District School in 1989.
Repeka lives in a hostel with her siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, returning home every Friday to spend quality time with their father. She expressed her emotions, revealing moments when she worried about her father’s well-being while dining at school. “I dedicate my achievement to my father and wish him long life from God since he is the only one I have,” she remarked, highlighting their bond.
