It has been over three years since Chiraag Murthi, a seven-year-old boy with hearing and speech disabilities, disappeared from his home in Qila, Taveuni Island, Vanua Levu, on November 12, 2021. His father, Shyam Murthi, is urging the Fiji Police Force to put more effort into solving the case, expressing frustration over the lack of updates he receives during his visits to the Taveuni Police Station.

Mr. Murthi has reported that police responses have often been rude and dismissive, leading him to suggest that officers undergo training in anger management and customer service. He feels that the isolation of Taveuni Island contributes to a difference in treatment by the police, who may feel less accountable.

The heartbroken father is also concerned about the vulnerability of their island to potential human trafficking and kidnapping incidents, particularly citing the need for better supervision of local jetties where business exports occur.

Despite the challenges he faces, Mr. Murthi vows to continue searching for his son, even as he prepares for another Christmas without him. The Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, assured that the investigation remains open and is ongoing.

This tragic case highlights the broader issues of law enforcement accountability, especially in remote areas. While frustration and heartache are palpable throughout this ordeal, Mr. Murthi’s determination reflects resilience and hope that a resolution will eventually come. The community’s support and voices can play a vital role in pushing for necessary changes within the police force, thereby increasing the chances of finding Chiraag and ensuring the safety of all residents on the island.

In a society that values family and community ties, Mr. Murthi’s unwavering spirit serves as a reminder of the importance of hope and tenacity in the face of adversity.
