It has been over three years since the mysterious disappearance of seven-year-old Chiraag Murthi from Taveuni Island, Vanua Levu. Chiraag, who had a hearing and speech disability, went missing from his home in the Qila area on November 12, 2021.
Chiraag’s father, Shyam Murthi, has been actively seeking answers and believes that the Fiji Police Force needs to enhance their efforts to resolve the case. He regularly visits the Taveuni Police Station for updates, but reports feeling dismissed and frustrated by the officers’ responses. Mr. Murthi has called for the police to undergo anger management and customer service training, highlighting how their treatment of residents can be affected by the isolation of the island.
As a father, Mr. Murthi is heartbroken and struggles with his family’s unanswered questions, especially from his other two children and his wife, who remain hopeful that Chiraag is still alive. He expressed concern over the vulnerability of Taveuni Island to threats such as human trafficking and kidnappings, due to inadequate monitoring of the jetties used for exports. Despite the ongoing challenges, he remains determined to continue searching for his son, even as another Christmas approaches without him.
On the official side, Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, assured the public that the investigation into Chiraag’s disappearance remains active and open.
This heartfelt plea from a father underscores not only the distress faced by families in similar situations but also highlights the need for community support and effective policing practices in areas that may feel neglected due to their geographic remoteness.
In summary, the story of Chiraag Murthi signifies the strength of parental love and the community’s desire for resolution and safety, reminding us all of the importance of vigilance and connection, even across vast distances. It reflects hope and resilience, which are essential in the search for Chiraag and the quest for justice.
