A 35-year-old man, Sairusi Ceinaturaga, is currently seeking bail while facing serious charges linked to the death of his one-year-old son. He has expressed concerns for his health, specifically regarding the risk of contracting HIV while in the remand center. This marks his second attempt at obtaining bail from High Court Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull.
Ceinaturaga faces charges of assault and murder, stemming from allegations made on October 17 last year at the Vunidawa settlement in Cunningham, Suva. He previously pled guilty to slapping his 27-year-old partner but has denied inflicting harm on his son, contesting claims that he struck the child with a spoon, slammed his head against a wall, and later threw him onto a mattress.
During the bail hearing, Justice Bull reminded Ceinaturaga that he must demonstrate a significant change in circumstances to be granted bail. Although he has decided to pursue private legal representation, he has yet to disclose the lawyer’s name, citing dissatisfaction with the Legal Aid Commission’s limited contact during his eight-month remand period. Justice Bull suggested he seek assistance from family for legal support.
The state prosecutor, Unal Lal, has opposed the bail application, noting that Ceinaturaga’s initial request for bail was denied on April 7. The case will now continue with a hearing scheduled for June 20.
This situation underscores the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and its implications for vulnerable children in potentially harmful environments. It serves as a reminder for communities to remain vigilant and supportive of individuals in distress, amplifying the urgent need for protective measures and interventions to prevent such tragic cases in the future. Emphasizing community awareness and support can contribute to fostering a safer environment for children and families facing domestic challenges.
