Father of Four Sentenced in Labasa for Violent Home Robbery, Judge Hints at Redemption

A father of four, Joji Nasedra, aged 48, has been sentenced to 11 years and nine months in prison after being convicted for his involvement in a violent robbery that occurred last year. In this incident, Nasedra and his accomplices stole mobile phones and $6,000 in cash from the home of Jay Jumar on April 1.

The trial, conducted in the High Court in Labasa, revealed the traumatic experience faced by the victims. Nasedra played a significant role in orchestrating the robbery, during which Jumar’s 14-year-old son was tied up, blindfolded, and assaulted. The situation escalated when Mr. Jumar’s three teenage daughters and his sister were forced to barricade themselves in a bathroom, where they were threatened with sexual violence as the robbers demanded cash.

Justice Lee James Burney highlighted the severity of the crimes and the lasting impact on the victims, noting that they sustained injuries that required medical attention. Despite the gravity of his actions, the judge acknowledged that Nasedra expressed remorse. He stated that Nasedra wished to be a present father for his disabled daughter and intended to serve as a positive role model.

In a poignant statement, Justice Burney urged Nasedra to reflect on the deep emotional scars inflicted on the victims, especially the innocent children affected by the night’s horrors. The judge emphasized a hope that upon his eventual release, Nasedra would commit to leading a responsible and law-abiding life, contributing positively to his family and community.

While the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime, there remains a potential for redemption as Nasedra contemplates his future and the example he sets for his children.
