A man has been taken into police custody following a tragic accident in Labasa that resulted in the death of his 16-year-old nephew. The incident occurred on December 4 when the victim, Shalvin Lal of Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s home around midnight to pick up his uncle. The accident took place shortly after 1 am at Naduna, where Lal allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a culvert. He reportedly died from the impact.

Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo confirmed that the uncle, who had permitted his nephew to drive, was brought in for questioning at the Labasa Police Station. Their investigation includes looking into the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid driver’s license. Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action.

This unfortunate event highlights the critical importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations. Ensuring that young drivers are properly licensed and experienced before getting behind the wheel can prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.

While this accident is deeply saddening, it serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance among guardians and the youth regarding responsible driving practices. The community can come together to promote safer driving habits and regulations, potentially saving lives in the future.
