A man who permitted his 16-year-old nephew to drive his vehicle has been taken into police custody following a tragic accident in Labasa on December 4. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed the arrest.
The incident involved Shalvin Lal of Tuatua, Labasa, who left his guardian’s home around midnight to pick up his uncle. The accident occurred shortly after 1 AM at Naduna, where, according to police reports, the young driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a culvert. Unfortunately, Lal died as a result of the impact.
Superintendent Soqosoqo indicated that the uncle, who permitted the driving, is currently being interviewed at the Labasa Police Station. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Additionally, the investigation will also consider the aspect of the deceased driving without a valid driver’s license.
While the situation is deeply saddening, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the critical need for adhering to legal regulations. Community awareness regarding these issues could potentially prevent future tragedies.
