Fatal Crash Prompts Police Warning

The Fiji Police Traffic Department is calling on drivers to take warnings about the dangers of speeding seriously, following the death of a 21-year-old man in Tavua on Friday afternoon.

Director Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, stated that initial information from traffic investigators pointed to alleged speeding as the cause of the fatal accident.

The 21-year-old was driving along Kings Road near Draunivi, Tavua, when the accident happened. It is alleged that while attempting to overtake another vehicle, he lost control of his car, leading to the crash.

SSP Divuana said the victim was rushed to Tavua Hospital where he was admitted but sadly passed away the following morning. Four passengers traveling with the victim were treated for injuries.

SSP Divuana mentioned that road safety stakeholders continuously remind the public about the importance of road safety through media and traffic stops conducted in all five divisions.

He highlighted that despite these reminders, drivers are still being booked for exceeding the national speed limit. This trend is reflected in the accident and fatality statistics, with speeding being a significant factor.

“Speeding continues to be a concern. We are booking drivers every day for exceeding the speed limit despite repeated warnings and advisories issued by police and the Land Transport Authority.

“Traffic officers at checkpoints are also issuing these reminders, yet they continue to fall on deaf ears. The road death toll currently stands at 31 compared to 57 for the same period last year, and together we can keep the statistics from growing if we all acknowledge and accept our responsibilities when it comes to road safety.”
