The Fiji Police Traffic Department is urging drivers to heed warnings about the dangers of speeding following the death of a 21-year-old man in Tavua on Friday afternoon.
Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, stated that initial information from traffic investigators indicated that speeding was the cause of the fatal accident.
The 21-year-old was driving along Kings Road near Draunivi in Tavua when the accident happened. It is alleged that while attempting to overtake another car, he lost control of his vehicle, leading to the crash.
SSP Divuana reported that the victim was rushed to Tavua Hospital where he was admitted, but unfortunately passed away the next morning. Four other people traveling with the victim were treated for their injuries.
SSP Divuana reiterated that road safety stakeholders have consistently issued reminders about road safety through various media channels and during traffic stops conducted across all five divisions. Despite these efforts, drivers continue to be caught exceeding the national speed limit, reflecting the ongoing issue in accident and fatality statistics where speeding is a significant factor.
“Speeding remains a major concern. We are booking drivers every day who exceed the speed limit, despite warnings and advisories from the police and the Land Transport Authority. Traffic officers at checkpoints are also issuing these reminders, yet they continue to be ignored. The current road death toll stands at 31 compared to 57 for the same period last year. We can prevent this statistic from growing if we all acknowledge and accept our responsibilities when it comes to road safety,” he said.
