The 2024 National Agriculture Show kicked off today at the Valelevu Grounds in Nasinu, focusing on empowering farmers through innovation and resilience to help the agricultural sector prosper amid challenges.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, inaugurated the event, highlighting agriculture’s vital role as the foundation of Fijian society. The three-day event is themed “Empowering Farmers, Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate Smart Agriculture,” emphasizing the essential contributions of farmers to national development and sustainability.

Gavoka recognized the traditional landowners, the Na Vanua o Matanikutu I Navisere, before welcoming participants from government, diplomatic corps, civil society organizations, farmers, and students. He pointed out that agriculture extends beyond being a mere sector; it is a crucial way of life that supports families, communities, and the economy, while also addressing the challenges posed by climate change and fluctuating global markets.

He highlighted several government initiatives aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, including the Farm to Fork initiative, which connects local farmers with the tourism industry by integrating locally sourced produce into the supply chain. This initiative, driven by various ministries and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, not only promotes Fijian cuisine but also supports sustainable tourism and helps to reduce the carbon footprint.

Gavoka also shared encouraging statistics, noting a 16% increase in exports of fresh and chilled products in the first half of 2024, alongside a 3% decline in imports, resulting in a savings of $17 million for Fiji. Despite these advancements, he urged for ongoing efforts to provide farmers with essential resources, training, and market access.

He concluded his address with an inspiring call to action, emphasizing the collective potential to build a strong agricultural sector that addresses poverty and enhances the quality of life for all Fijians.
