Members of the Koroisau Co-operative, a village company based in Nadi, celebrated a significant milestone as their long-awaited dream came to fruition this week.

On Monday, Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, delivered a tractor equipped with a three-disc plough, valued at $47,100, to Naboutini Village in Sabeto. Co-operative chairperson Sikeli Tabua expressed his gratitude to the government for this timely support.

“We will maximize the use of this tractor,” Tabua stated, noting that the co-operative manages two hectares of land planted with cassava, various vegetables, and fruit-bearing trees.

The co-operative aims to become the leading supplier of vegetables to nearby roadside markets and hotels, emphasizing quality, quantity, and customer satisfaction. With the new tractor, they believe they can achieve this ambition.

This assistance was part of the Farm Mechanisation Programme, where the co-operative covered one-third of the cost ($15,700), and the Ministry funded the remaining two-thirds.

Tunabuna encouraged co-operative members to empower themselves in this evolving environment. “We no longer rely solely on traditional knowledge passed down by our ancestors. Support each other, as we will be stronger together. The concept of solesolevaki (working in groups) remains powerful today,” he remarked.

He acknowledged the members’ patience waiting for the government’s support, indicating that the tractor would significantly enhance their farming capabilities. “Now you no longer need to depend on others for land preparation,” he added.

Established in January, the Koroisau Co-operative has effectively utilized their iTaukei Land Trust Board (iTLTB)-leased lands and plans to expand for their farming enterprise. The co-operative comprises 26 registered members, including 14 females and 12 males, with a focus on achieving financial stability and securing markets for fresh produce in local resorts and hotels. They supply their goods to the municipal markets in Nadi and Lautoka.
