The Cabinet has approved a special payment of over $7.6 million for sugarcane farmers to facilitate their preparations for the forthcoming 2025 cane crushing season. This initiative, which entails no deductions from the government, is aimed at equipping farmers with the necessary capital and labor as they approach the new crushing season set to commence in early June.
The government’s decision comes in light of the severe challenges farmers faced during the 2024 season, which included prolonged dry conditions, rising production costs, and labor shortages. These factors have significantly impacted farmers’ ability to meet production targets and adequately prepare for future harvesting activities.
Under the existing Master Award framework, sugarcane growers previously received their cane proceeds in five installments. Currently, farmers have received the first three payments for the 2024 season, totaling $69.63 per tonne, and are looking forward to the remaining two payments scheduled for this month and October. The additional special payment of $5 per tonne is specifically designed to support farmers as they gear up for the next season.
This development aligns with previous announcements regarding increased support for the sugar industry, which has seen calls for additional financial relief as farmers navigate economic pressures. The government has demonstrated a commitment to uplifting the sugarcane sector, aiming to promote stability within the industry while encouraging resilience among farmers in facing environmental and market challenges.
Positive feedback from agricultural stakeholders underscores the hope that these measures will significantly ease financial burdens, allowing farmers to focus on their operations as they prepare to contribute to the upcoming season effectively. Ultimately, this initiative reflects a concerted effort to bolster the sugar industry in Fiji, fostering a sense of optimism for the future.
