Sugar Industry Minister Charan Jeath Singh has reiterated the government’s unwavering support for farmers amidst ongoing challenges in the sugar industry. He assured that the Coalition Government prioritizes the interests of farmers and is committed to ensuring they receive fair payments. Singh emphasized that the third cane payment for the 2024 season will stand at $12.22 per ton, aligning closely with the average payment of the previous seven years, which was $12.90 per ton (excluding government top-ups).
Highlighting the ongoing payment process, Singh pointed out that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has complied with legal obligations under the Master Award by making this third payment, while also stressing that this does not conclude the payment cycle for the 2024 crop. “Additional support will be provided to guarantee that growers receive just compensation for their hard work,” Singh stated. The government has consistently delivered record total cane payments, reaching $91.38 per ton for the 2022 crop and a remarkable $105.08 per ton for the 2023 crop.
He assured farmers that necessary payments are underway, and the government remains committed to continuous support to ensure the sustainability of the sugar industry. Singh noted that the full payment process for the 2024 crop is still in motion, and the Coalition Government is determined to deliver further financial assistance to the sugarcane farmers.
Recent articles reveal a mixed sentiment among farmers regarding payment levels, with some expressing concern that the payments may not sufficiently cover operational costs, including debts and labor expenses. While challenges persist, including rising production costs and the need for improved agricultural practices, there is cautious optimism about the future, bolstered by government initiatives aimed at boosting productivity and sustaining livelihoods in the sector.
Overall, the government’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to reinforcing the agricultural backbone of Fiji, demonstrating the importance of collaboration and ongoing support within the sugar industry. The assurance of further financial backing provides a hopeful outlook as farmers navigate the complexities of their economic landscape.
