A farmer has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated robbery involving the Alison Supermarket at Laucala Beach Estate, near Suva, where it is alleged that he and two accomplices stole a significant sum of money totaling $25,750.35. Leone Lesumailepanoni appeared before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe at the High Court in Suva, facing four counts related to the incident that occurred on December 2 of the previous year.

The robbery was reportedly executed with violence, as the accused and his accomplices allegedly tied up a taxi driver, leaving him in the boot of his vehicle. Armed with cane knives, they threatened both supermarket staff and customers. Among the victims was Ashwita Narayan, who was reportedly robbed of nearly $24,000 in cash, while another customer, Rita Reddy, lost $100 and her handbag.

Due to the severity of the charges and the public interest in the case, Justice Rajasinghe indicated that a prompt hearing date would be established. State prosecutor Simone Seruvatu confirmed that statements made during the accused’s caution interview would not be presented during the trial. Additionally, the defense has yet to receive the crucial CCTV footage from the supermarket, which is expected to be disclosed before the trial.

Legal representation for the accused is provided by Shivani Narayan from the Legal Aid Commission, who is scheduled to meet with Mr. Seruvatu for a pretrial conference on March 20. The accused has also elected to withdraw his bail application. A tentative trial date has been set for September 8, and in the meantime, Mr. Lesumailepanoni will remain in custody, with the court adjourning the case to April 2.

This situation highlights the ongoing issues of violent crime and safety in commercial areas. It underscores the importance of effective security measures in preventing such incidents and protecting both customers and employees. As the legal proceedings continue, there is hope that justice will prevail, ensuring community safety and accountability for those who commit such acts.
