In the serene village of Muaniweni, located in Naitasiri, Sarita Kumari Lal has established a fulfilling life over the past three decades, deeply intertwined with the land. Living with her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, the family of four primarily relies on farming to sustain their well-being.

Every day, they tend to their plantation, which is rich in dalo and other root crops that form the cornerstone of their livelihood. In addition to these staples, they cultivate an array of fresh vegetables, ensuring a constant supply of food right at their doorstep. Ms. Lal emphasizes that farming transcends mere survival—it’s about living well. “We are lucky because we have our own farm,” she reflects, expressing gratitude for their ability to grow their food.

The family’s access to fresh produce has drastically reduced their dependence on store-bought vegetables, which Ms. Lal notes has a beneficial effect on their health. Meals are often prepared with ingredients harvested mere hours before cooking, helping to maintain both nutritional value and flavor. “When you eat what you grow yourself, you know it is fresh and safe,” she asserts, highlighting the comfort that comes from growing their own food.

While the farm meets most of their dietary needs, Ms. Lal mentions that they make monthly trips to Nausori for grocery shopping at Pak & Save Supermarket. These excursions allow them to purchase essential household items in bulk, typically budgeting around $500 monthly to cover necessities like rice, flour, cooking oil, and toiletries. This bulk buying not only saves them money but also minimizes the need for frequent trips into town.

Life in Muaniweni may be simple, but for Ms. Lal, it is deeply rewarding. Farming keeps their family active, helps reduce living expenses, and fosters a sense of independence. Despite the inherent challenges of rural life, Ms. Lal believes the positives truly outweigh the negatives. “We may be far from town, but we have what we need here. As long as we have our land, our crops, and our family together, we are content,” she explains.

Ms. Lal also encourages conscious consumerism among shoppers, reminding them of the importance of being mindful of what they buy. By taking the time to read product labels, individuals can better understand what they are purchasing, leading to healthier decisions and ultimately cultivating a more informed community.
