Fijian President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu recently bid farewell to outgoing United States Ambassador Marie Damour during a courtesy visit at the State House. In this meeting, President Lalabalavu expressed gratitude on behalf of the Fijian government and its people for Damour’s outstanding diplomatic service and her essential role in fortifying the Fiji-U.S. relationship.
The President praised Damour for her exemplary leadership and her proactive involvement in matters of mutual interest. He noted, “Ambassador Damour has played an instrumental role in enhancing the cooperation between Fiji and the United States. Her commitment to advancing shared priorities, particularly in climate resilience, maritime security, and development support, has made a lasting impact on our relationship.” He also recognized her efforts in promoting regional stability and humanitarian initiatives.
In response, Ambassador Damour thanked President Lalabalavu and the Fijian government for their support during her tenure, saying, “It has been an honour to serve in Fiji and to work alongside the government in advancing the goals we share for a secure, resilient, and prosperous Pacific region. I am deeply appreciative of the warm hospitality shown to me throughout my time here.” She emphasized that the United States will continue its commitment to Fiji’s national priorities and expressed confidence that the partnership will thrive moving forward.
This transition symbolizes not only the end of one diplomatic relationship but also the potential for deeper collaboration and mutual support between Fiji and the United States in the future. As both nations continue to tackle global challenges together, the foundations laid during Damour’s tenure are likely to yield positive outcomes for both countries in areas such as climate action, security, and community development.
