Farewell to a Visionary Leader: Professor Tupeni Baba’s Legacy

The University of Fiji is mourning the loss of Professor Tupeni Baba, a senior figure in their academic community. Professor Baba, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Arts and a prominent Professor of Education, passed away as announced by Vice Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem.

Joining the University of Fiji in 2017, Professor Baba was known for his intellectual leadership and unwavering commitment to both his students and colleagues. His distinguished career also saw him serve in significant government roles, including Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister.

Professor Baba was a passionate advocate for educational reform in Fiji, a commitment that sometimes led to conflicts with higher authorities. Despite these challenges, his dedication to academic integrity and progress remained resolute.

Vice Chancellor Shameem expressed her sorrow, stating, “The University has lost a great academic, and the nation a deep intellectual. We will miss him.” She also extended heartfelt condolences to Professor Baba’s family, especially his wife, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Fiji National University.
