Nancy Chute has officially stepped down as the president of the Suva Marathon Club after years of dedicated service fostering a love for distance running within the community. This farewell was marked by an emotional event on July 5, coinciding with the launch of the 2025 Munro Leys Suva Marathon.

Chute reflected on her time leading the club, expressing a mixture of pride in the growth and evolution of the organization, and sadness at leaving a role that has been so integral to her life. She praised the club for creating an inclusive atmosphere where runners of all skill levels can find a place. Under her leadership, both the Suva Marathon and Namosi Marathon flourished, drawing larger participation and enhancing their reputations while ensuring that the environment remained welcoming.

During Saturday’s launch event, approximately 60 runners participated in a 5km and 10km run, showcasing the supportive spirit that the club is known for. Chute acknowledged the special moments she has experienced—capturing the essence of community and connection at the finish line during races, where strangers bond over shared achievements.

As she prepares to move abroad with her family, Chute intends to stay connected with the running community and continues to advocate for youth involvement in the sport. She looks forward to seeing the club’s growth and hopes it will further engage communities beyond Suva.

“Life is about balance,” she remarked, encouraging others to savor both the thrill of completing the marathon and the excitement that follows at events like the Homecoming concert in Nadi.

Chute’s departure marks a significant transition for the Suva Marathon Club, but her impact will undeniably continue to influence the community of runners she so lovingly helped to nurture. Her legacy reinforces the notion that running is not merely a sport, but a pathway to community and camaraderie.

This change in leadership opens new opportunities for fresh ideas and perspectives, fostering a hopeful future for the running community in Fiji.
