Farewell to a Legend: Remembering Zanzeer Singh

Zanzeer Singh, a prominent sports journalist in the country, passed away at the age of 49 on Tuesday at Lautoka Aspen Hospital after battling a long illness.

His younger brother, Ranbeer Singh, a former Fiji TV journalist, shared that Zanzeer, known as Zan, led a joyful and sociable life, often organizing get-togethers and social events. He praised his brother’s generous spirit and warm-hearted nature.

Charlie Charters, a former Fiji rugby union official and sports marketing executive, remembered Zanzeer as an exceptional reporter exhibiting humanity, integrity, and a sense of humor. He expressed his respect for Zanzeer’s dedication to his craft, often directing news tips his way due to his excellent writing skills and determination to secure space for his stories in newspapers.

Writer Jone Kalouniviti described Zanzeer as a true media professional from the western region of the country, noting his genuine rapport with people. He acknowledged that while Zanzeer’s direct communication style may have been misinterpreted by some, his humor was always evident.

Indra Singh, FBC news director, reflected on the legend Zanzeer represented to his colleagues, highlighting his unique approach to storytelling and his unwavering willingness to help others. He pointed out that Zanzeer’s love for sports and beer reflected his zest for life, noting the significant loss felt by those who knew him.

Zanzeer Singh received his early education at Namaka Public School in Nadi, where he was classmates with former Fiji 7s rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula and former rugby player Joeli Lotawa. He continued his studies at Swami Vivekananda College.

He began his journalism career as a stringer for the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation in 1997, later joining Fiji Sun in 1999 before moving to the Fiji Times in 2003, where he worked for two decades.

Zanzeer is survived by his wife, Rita Singh, and their two children, Nirvana and Siddhartha Iyer. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, with a viewing at Lautoka’s Girmit Centre before the final rites at Lovu crematorium at 1 pm.
