As Kevin Naiqama looks back on his remarkable 15-year international career with the Vodafone Fiji Bati, he expresses strong belief that the team has the potential to vie for a spot in the final of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in England. After participating in two World Cup semifinals, Naiqama experienced an emotional send-off during what is likely to be his final match, where Fiji triumphed over the Cook Islands with a score of 56-6, in front of a large family turnout at Suva’s HFC Stadium.

Following a setback in the opening round of the Pacific Championships against the Kumuls, where the Bati faced a 22-10 defeat, the team now needs the Aitu to pull off an upset against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on Sunday to secure a chance in the promotion-relegation play-off against the third-placed team from the Cup competition.

Naiqama, who holds the title of the most capped Fijian international player, treated his 26th Test match with the seriousness of a farewell and expressed confidence in the future of the Bati, crediting the rise of young players in the NRL. Reflecting on his debut in 2009, which saw only two NRL players—his brother Wes Naiqama and Akuila Uate—represent Fiji, he emphasized the growth in player development: “To see the trajectory and how rugby league has grown… we’ve got a pool of players now, and it’s only going to get better.”

He is hopeful that the Bati will continue to thrive and achieve a strong showing in upcoming World Cups, noting, “In the World Cup, we tend to play our best footy, so I know we’re only going to get better.”

Naiqama’s teammate and newly appointed captain, Tui Kamikamica, commended Naiqama’s leadership and mentorship throughout his career, stating that the players made it their commitment to honor him with a fitting farewell. Kamikamica shared the emotional atmosphere of the game, highlighting Naiqama’s inspiration to both veterans and young players on the team.

In a heartfelt address before the match, Naiqama expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country, noting the unique connection he feels to Fiji through his heritage. “There’s a bond and it’s for our family… You need no motivation to represent your country,” he reflected.

Naiqama was deeply moved by the unexpected support from family members who traveled great distances to attend the match, leaving him overwhelmed with emotion during those moments shared together.

In summary, Kevin Naiqama’s career with the Vodafone Fiji Bati has been marked by significant achievements and inspiring performances. As he embarks on his next chapter, there’s a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji rugby league, fueled by emerging talent and a strong sense of community. The passion and commitment Naiqama instilled in his teammates and the significant support from his family serve as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Bati, as they look ahead to the challenges of the upcoming World Cup.
