Vasiti Soko, the Director of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), has been a prominent figure in media during natural disasters, a role she will be leaving behind as she moves to the United States. Fijians recognize Ms. Soko for her guidance on safety measures and updates on evacuation center operations.
She was honored at a farewell event on Thursday evening by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, along with his assistant minister, Jovesa Vocea.
Minister Ditoka lauded her contributions as “extraordinary,” highlighting that under her leadership, the NDMO has set a standard for excellence, gaining recognition for its proactive strategies in disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response. He noted her dedication to enhancing the national disaster management framework, equipping communities to face the increasing challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.
Ms. Soko held her position for five years and was the first woman to serve in this role.
