Farewell to a Boxing Legend: Fiji Mourns Ubayd Haider

A large crowd gathered today at the National Gymnasium in Suva to honor the life of Ubayd Haider, a Fijian featherweight boxer affectionately known as the ‘Prince of Fiji.’ Haider, originally named Nathaniel Singh, passed away at Lautoka Hospital after suffering severe head injuries sustained during a boxing match in Nadi on October 26.

Sports Minister Jese Saukuru attended the event and delivered an emotional eulogy, expressing sorrow over the loss of a “golden talent” and highlighting Haider’s role in inspiring younger generations. He reassured Haider’s family of the government’s support during this difficult time.

Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy spoke warmly about his long acquaintance with Haider, lauding his dedication and hard work in the boxing profession. He emphasized the boxer’s potential and the deep sense of loss felt by the community.

Boxing legend Sonny Bill Williams also extended his condolences, sharing that he witnessed Haider’s last fight and promised to visit the Singh family to show his support.

Following the memorial service at the National Gymnasium, Haider’s body was transported to his family home in Laucala Bay for burial at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. Ubayd Haider is survived by his wife, Helen, and their two young sons.
