A family in Vunivau, Labasa, experienced a devastating loss last Friday night when a fire completely destroyed their home, valued at approximately $200,000 and built over 45 years. Prasheel Naicker, 27, reported that his father, grandmother, and uncle were inside the house during the incident, which began while he was out visiting relatives in Labasa Town.

The fire reportedly started in the family’s prayer room and rapidly spread to the roof. Fortunately, two passersby noticed the flames and alerted the family. Despite Naicker’s efforts to contact the National Fire Authority (NFA) and his personal visit to the local fire station to urge a swift response, the firefighters arrived too late to save any of their belongings. “We couldn’t save anything from the house,” he lamented, adding that the family’s losses are profound.

This incident marks the second major house fire in the Northern Division within just two weeks. The first fire occurred on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa, where a family’s home was also completely destroyed while they were away, leading to losses estimated at $250,000. In that case, concerns about possible arson were raised, further underscoring the urgent need for improved fire safety measures in rural communities.

The acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed ongoing investigations into both fires, while the NFA is assessing factors that may have compromised their ability to respond effectively, such as limited resources and geographic challenges.
